Some associate state pride to its college football team or a local craft beer, but under the surface, a growing pride is being derived from regional defense-tech successes. As states move away from the “shotgun approach” (trying to attract any defense contractor), to a “sniper approach” (dominating a specific, high-moat niche), it is becoming increasingly clear that states seek regional specialization to ensure a year-on-year slice of the $800B+ Department of Defense budget.
